Nordeste Private Tour

The far end of the island: cliff-top gardens, hidden waterfalls and hydrangea-lined roads where you may not see another tourist all day.

About this tour

Locals call Nordeste "the tenth island" because for centuries it was so hard to reach. Today it is the most peaceful corner of São Miguel, with deep green valleys, lush viewpoints maintained like gardens and a coastline of black cliffs dropping into the Atlantic.

This private full-day tour is perfect for second-time visitors, hikers and anyone who wants the island's beauty without the crowds.

Yes, especially if you have three or more days on the island. Nordeste is the least visited region of São Miguel, with dramatic cliffs, manicured cliff-top gardens and some of the island's best waterfalls, and far fewer crowds than Sete Cidades or Furnas.

How hard is the Salto do Prego hike?

The trail from Sanguinho to the Salto do Prego waterfall is about 2.8 miles round trip with moderate ups and downs, and takes around 2 hours. Good shoes are recommended as the path can be muddy.
